The birth of B-Spec Racecars

Inexpensive and easy to maintain, these subcompacts can deliver big on the racing thrills without busting the bank.

During a 25-hour endurance race, the professional drivers coaxed the Fit and Mazda2 through all the hoops of racing - tight turns, flat-outs and banked bends. The drivers were delighted to drive them, one even calling the Fit "one of the best cars I have ever raced". We believe him.

The cars themselves were not significantly modified from a performance standpoint. Many of the modifications were safety oriented, in order to prepare the cars for some rugged racing. Internals of the engine and transmission cannot be modified as per the rules of the race. There are no headers, superchargers or wild cams to be seen on this battlefield. Interestingly enough, both the Mazda2 and Fit share the racing road with more muscular opponents such as Porsche and other notable racing greats.

Interestingly enough, the rains that visited the track played to the Fit's stock strengths. The wet track let it pass even the Porsche 911 GT3 and some other frontrunners until they wise up and grab some rain tires to reclaim the lead.

All in all, the Mazda2 and the Fit finished 19th and 15th place, a remarkable accomplishment considering the lightly modified entries and unmodified 1.5-liter four cylinder engines. In all 25 hours of the race, neither the Mazda2 nor Fit had a serious problem or an accident. The fuel efficiency of both cars was an advantage, too. Both cars were able to drive aggressively for over 2 hours on the allotted 10 gallons of gas allowed in the tank for the race. Compared to the bigger engines having to refuel every 45 minutes or so, it was a difference that really added up.

The fans and the drivers all had an excellent time, so there will be more of these races in the near future. Stay connected with our site for the latest brand news and offers available.
