There's a lot of "new" in the new Odyssey Honda has taken some bold risks with their tried-and-true mini-van formula, and they have paid off grandly. Boasting a peppy performance from its 3.5 liter V6, the smile will hit your face on the first turn the all-new Odyssey delivers the flattest cornering in the mini-van market. Steering and brakes are also acutely responsive, as it should be for most of these will be hauling the most precious cargo of all your families.
Honda has done some fine interior architecture on the inside, resulting in a much roomier experience.
One of the first things we noticed when the new Odyssey arrived back in October was that it was wider, allowing for the first "true" center seat in mini-van design. This only translates to an inch or so on the outside proportions, but inside is a whole other story. Whether you are 180+ pound adult, or just trying to fit a deluxe car seat into the center position, you'll be pleased to know there is plenty of comfort and room to negotiate in all of three of the rows. The third row is the most impressive, with enough room to host a trio of adults in comfortable harmony. A conventional DVD system is available for the children, and you can even go big in the Touring Elite trim model with a widescreen boasting HDMI inputs.
Large, comfy seats fill the house, with the driver's station well-designed and expertly fitted. Three-zone air conditioning will keep everyone cool on those tough summer days, and an available 12-speaker array will keep your family rockin' in 5.1 surround sound.
A six-speed transmission makes its first appearance in a Honda in the new Odyssey on the higher trim levels. The shorter gear ratios and quicker shifts help to produce a seamless, confident driving experience. Minivans have always been an interesting segment to watch - the introduction of the "Crossover" in the early 2000's nearly did them in, but they have gradually recuperated as the American population slowly accepts them back into their graces. A large percentage of the minivans sold in America in the last decade are the Honda Odyssey - and we like to think it's the excellent design, the incredible utility and the unmatched value and safety of this exceptional Honda that has singlehandedly kept the entire minivan segment prospering. In fact, each year, minivan sales continue to grow - anyone that gives the Odyssey a test drive is going to see with clarity the advantages it has over any crossover.
