The hybrid variant of the Honda Fit, already out in Japan, is already the cheapest hybrid to hit the Asian market, and will be the cheapest one here, too. Its expected price tag will undercut the Insight, America's current most-economical hybrid, by thousands.

The Honda Fit Hybrid will carry an electric motor and 1.3 liter engine. It is expected to yield over 70 MPG in fuel economy. Built upon the highly successful platform of the gas Fit, you can guarantee it will have a stylish appearance, a deceptively spacious cabin and fully versatile, 5-passenger interior. The Honda's electric engine currently used in the Insight, the Integrated Motor Assist, will be making the electric magic in the Honda Fit Hybrid. It should prove to be a complete package of fuel efficiency, price, ground-breaking technology and design for a fraction of the cost of today's hybrids. It should prove to be a perfect blend of style and sensibility for the South Floridian commute. The video above shows the Japanese model, but little should change for the American market, outside of moving the steering wheel to the "proper" side.
